Trinity Lutheran Church of Kalamazoo, MI

About Us

Exterior of Trinity Lutheran ChurchWe are a diverse congregation located in the downtown area near the Western Michigan University campus. A look around the sanctuary on Sunday reveals young couples with their children, older couples enjoying their retirement, and college students. Our worship service itself is traditional and easy to follow. We are also service oriented, with many service organizations and projects to choose from.

In an August 2002 article of the church newsletter, Pastor Ken described how Trinity is like a family:

"It was a simple off hand remark which I didn't even take notice of at first. The maintenance person up at Camp Michi-Lu-Ca (Fairview, MI) was asking our Confirmation campers "who works well together?" Our group from Trinity had volunteered to help with some painting at the new Red Pine Lodge, and the maintenance man was just trying to pair off the teens into working on various parts of this rather large room. The immediate response from our group was "we all work great together", and he started handing out brushes and buckets, and pointing out various places to paint. To our group it was a very natural expression of genuine camaraderie. It wasn't until later that afternoon that I was chatting with the maintenance man again that he remarked "you know they gave the right answer", to which I gave a rather puzzled look, in not even knowing what question he was talking about. He went on to explain how most of the teens that had been volunteering would immediately try and pair off or say who they wanted to be with, where as with our group it was almost a natural sense of "family."

Congregation of Trinity Lutheran ChurchThe more I thought of that brief exchange, the more I thought of how indicative that sense of "togetherness" is for not only our youth, but the whole family here at Trinity. Our youth are an obvious microcosm of our congregation. They come from all socio-economic backgrounds, have varied interests, desires, and dreams. Yet their oneness in Christ readily and easily overcomes all of those societal pressures and barriers. When I am with the youth, I can readily see an open and easy banter and joy of being together. But I also find that in just about every worship setting, meeting, social gathering, etc. that I have been to in my years at Trinity. We are a family in Christ. We pray for and support each other. We both laugh and cry with each other. We rejoice and sing praises to God as we are on this pilgrim journey. "Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it" (I Cor. 12:12)"
